Local Activities

You can always find plenty to do here in the Tawases. We've listed some examples on the page below. While most local activities are outdoors oriented, the Tawases also support a local theater group, various fraternal orders and host a number of arts and crafts shows. Local churches have thriving congregations of various denominations and local business groups are active in community affairs.

Those who enjoy photo opportunities will be pleased with the scenic beauty available in Iosco county. It contains several beautiful sights ranging from several scenic overviews of the AuSable river to quiet and secluded freshwater springs. Another favorite spot is the majestic Tawas Point lighthouse.

For the boating enthusiast, a wide variety of water conditions can be found, ranging from 'open water' sailing on Lake Huron, to the more sheltered conditions in Tawas Bay. For others, the many inland lakes and rivers provide excellent opportunities for smaller boats, canoes and tubes.

If fishing is one of your interests, you'll love this area. Fishing for perch, walleye, steelhead, brown trout, salmon, lake trout, and northern pike is excellent, both on the bay and the many inland lakes and streams.

Camping and picnicking are popular pastimes here. There are a number of local campgrounds/campsites, operated by various Federal, State and local governments as well as private operators. Sites ranging from 'rustic' to fully equipped are usually available (I do recommend you call for reservations when possible). Multiple day parks are located in the area for an afternoon of picnicking, swimming and other recreational activities.

If watching wildlife (especially bird watching) brings you pleasure, then a leisurely drive through the area should please you. Tuttle Marsh, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, covers nearly 5,000 acres. White-tailed deer, fox, coyote, beaver, muskrat, otter, weasel, grouse, heron, waterfowl, and songbirds thrive in this area. Tawas Point State Park is a stop-over point on a major migratory route and is well known nationally as an excellent bird watching site. Wild turkey can often be seen throughout the county. More shy, and thus less often seen, the bald eagles and trumpeter swans along the AuSable river can provide a thrilling sight.

For those who prefer 'pedal power', there are miles of well paved secondary roads that wind through farmland, wooded areas and past inland lakes. These offer the biking enthusiast many hours of riding pleasure.

If you enjoy occasionally 'teeing off', then you should try one of the many golf courses in the area. Of course, if you're drive isn't quite up to par these days, there are also a couple of modern miniature golf courses available. Watch out for the caramel and fudge kitchen in one of them though!

For those who enjoy the sun and surf, the numerous clean sandy beaches and water side parks provide ample room for plenty of 'fun in the sun'. Several picnic areas, playgrounds, and pavilions are also maintained for your pleasure and relaxation.

Well over 110,000 acres of prime public hunting land can be found with abundant deer, small game, and waterfowl.

When it comes time for the autumn colors to come to the trees, you can find one of the best views around from the decks of the AuSable River Queen. This double deck stern wheeler takes you on a memorable (if somewhat sedate) trip along the AuSable river.

The Corsair trails system provides over 44 miles of cross country skiing and hiking trails. These trails can vary from sedate runs through quiet forest glades, to trails running along the top of the tall AuSable river embankment. Hundreds of miles of ORV trails provide many hours of snowmobiling pleasure. Several small inland ponds and a few outdoor rinks are also available for those who enjoy ice skating activities.
